What is new in the AI Copilot
The September 2026 release adds the ability to change and delete shifts that already exist, and to carry out several instructions from a single message. A manager can type “Make Thursday 7 to 3, take Imani off Saturday, and Wednesday needs 4 people,” review one confirmation card showing each change and what it replaces, and approve all three at once. Shifts can be selected the way people talk about them, such as “Rosa’s shifts” or “the understaffed ones,” and the Copilot asks a question when more than one shift fits.
A second addition, “Set it up for me,” lets a new customer paste in a team list or staffing plan in whatever form they already have. The Copilot reads it and shows what it found: people and the jobs each of them does, locations, job roles, staffing requirements by time of day, hours individuals cannot work, and custom policies such as nobody working two weekends in a row. Nothing is created until the manager approves the list on screen.
AI Copilot: every action it takes
The AI scheduling Copilot is powered by GPT-5.2 with function calling, and every action is shown for review before it runs. Its capabilities today:

– Generate a complete schedule for a date range using Fair Rotation or Maximize Hours

– Send a direct message to an employee, or post an organization-wide announcement
– Save a week as a template and reapply it later
– Answer questions about the team from the last 30 days of shifts and clock-ins

– Do any of the above by voice instead of typing
Autopilot: rules enforced without a manager
Autopilot is the second AI system inside XShift. A manager writes a rule in plain English, such as “no one works more than 32 hours a week” or “keep Friday-night labor under $600.” Autopilot checks that the names are real people on the team, warns if the rule conflicts with an existing one, and turns it on. From then on the rule is applied every time a schedule is built, a call-out is covered, or someone is added by hand. The Autopilot scheduling software includes:

– Employee pairing rules, weekly hour and per-shift caps, minimum rest between shifts including overnight shifts that cross midnight, weekend rotation limits, and consecutive-day limits counted across every location
– Rule priority ordering, so the highest-ranked rule wins when two conflict
– An Autopilot log recording every action it took on its own
